Commodore’s Comment – June 2018
Well, last month, I commented at how clear the water in the lake was. I obviously spoke too soon as following a spell of warm sunny weather, the weed has returned and many regulars to the club will have spotted that the committee and wheelie boats are now on the mooring normally occupied by the hut. Whilst the committee boat was moved under its own power, the same cannot be said for the wheelie boat. Four of us paddled the jeanneau rescue boat over to the far corner of the lake and then towed the wheelie boat out under “paddle power”. We hope that none of you were there with your cameras at that point in time as it would probably have looked like an older version of Junior Week!
Junior racing has now started on Sundays at 12:30. This is a half hour race and for the two weeks that I have watched it, the attendance has been encouraging and is acting as a good confidence builder for our junior members. I hope to see this event grow in size, who knows, we may end up with more junior sailors in boats on the water on a Sunday afternoon than in the adult racing which follows.
The concrete slab in front of the club house has been broken up and replaced. Two new wooden picnic tables of the same design as the current ones have been purchased and will be installed early July. Current Thursday work party activities and focused both in the attic area, where racking is being installed to assist in sorting that area out, and on making a path down the side of the building to provide better wheelchair access.
Work Parties are back on the agenda with two being scheduled for July, prior to Junior week. As for the ones run at the beginning of the year, there will be a member of the committee assigned to each and that person will be in touch via email in advance to indicate what the work will be and what tools etc. would be of use.
The next two groups on this year’s work party list are surnames:
O - Pe - Saturday 21st July
Pi – Rin - Saturday 28th July
All members are asked to undertake a work party day each year, so if you have missed your scheduled one you are most welcome to attend. There will be a register kept of who attends, so even if you cannot stay for the full day, every contribution helps.
The boat shed is being well used and it is hard to imagine that only eighteen months ago we managed to fit everything into what effectively is now the ladies changing room. Whilst it is said that we tend to fill the space available, having a much bigger facility is not an excuse to be un-tidy and just deposit things anywhere. The bosuns and instructors are trying to have allocated areas for storing boats, sails, tools and machinery. Please be aware that members of all ages go into the boat shed and therefore the “natural” pathways need to be kept clear of obstruction.
On several occasions, we have requested that members sailing equipment which is stored in the boat shed must all be marked with a form of ownership identification. This can be Surname, Boat sail number, Post Code or the spare copy of your berthing sticker.
There is still a lot of sailing equipment lying around within the boat shed where the owner is not readily identifiable. Unmarked dagger boards, rudders, tillers and some sails have been moved to the loft area of the boat store and masts and booms to the top rung of the Topper sail rack. If you are missing equipment, please check these two locations.
Unclaimed items still left in the loft or on the top sailing rack at the end of the year will be assumed to be abandoned and will be disposed of or sold. Any queries please contact the Bosun - Malcolm Payton.
Phase three refurbishment plans have been revised by Ian Cook as a result of members comments on the draft plan and a cost estimate will now be made based on the practical experiences with phase two.
The revised plan does not include the moving of the wall in the reception area which would be required for a future installation of a lift to the main club room, but the plan of work (door positioning, plumbing etc.) will be such that this facility remains as a future option.
The new junior club has not held a meeting during June due to the junior training activities. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday 14 July.
FOSSC Junior week will be run between Monday 30th July to Friday 3rd August. For those who have already registered juniors for the week, Diana Heming will have been in touch with you with further information. The week is not quite up to maximum capacity yet so if you are having late thoughts about wanting to attend, please email Diana Heming diana.heming@btinternet.com providing name(s) of junior members, FOSSC membership number, contact email address.
Sailability has been taking place on Tuesday evenings, the last one of these being Tuesday 19th June. As of Saturday 30th June, sailability activities will return to their normal Saturday morning slot.
Social Sailing on Friday evenings continues to be well supported. As previously mentioned, we will be creating additional seating area in front of the club house in early July. Also, as the junior training courses come to an end during the next two weeks, we hope to see more of our younger members coming along to practice their newly acquired skills, instructors are normally available on site to provide advice. There will be a safety boat on the water by 18:30 and will be available until 20:00. For your information, there is a sheet on the notice board in the wet bar area indicating who is in charge for any given week.
OnBoard events is where we give specific groups of youngsters the opportunity to experience sailing at FOSSC. Frampton scouts were taken out on Monday 18th and all had a good sail and most got to try their hand at a power boat as well.The following list is of the current fixtures and if you are available to take them out for a sail in a club sailing or power boat, please add your name to the list in the wet bar area.

Club Security
We have recently encountered some security issues at the club where the gate has been left open.
Please can we remind OOD's that cash boxes need to be locked in the safe before you leave and to all members, if you are the last to leave, please make sure the clubhouse is locked and the gate secure.

Red Flag Procedure
Dear All, Apologies if you are awaiting a response to recent emails, I have been away for the last 2 weeks & though back, have some immediate demands on my time. I will endeavour to deal with the respective issues at my earliest opportunity.
Unfortunately I'm guilty too of relying on recent newsletter information regarding the above; to permit moves to vacant slots that are perhaps more convenient for members.
Attached below is the essential information again, I will also place a notice on the board asap & if possible include a notice within the boat sticker collection case so there are plenty of reference points. Should the system be successful over the rest of the year, I trust we will be able to add it to the "Year Book" information too.
I'm sure previous berthing secretaries will confirm the dinghy park is always "A work in progress"; as such one coordinator is essential.
Whilst I'm clear it has been entirely unintentional to circumvent the instructions, allocations I have made, have been blocked by independent placements.
I will work through the requests, as advised in strict date order & with goodwill trust this can be sorted out with the minimum of fuss.
I suggest everyone sit's tight until I make further contact please.
WITH REGARD TO FURTHER MOVES - PLEASE DO NOT MOVE YOUR BOAT WITHOUT A CONFIRMATION OF ALLOCATION.

Berthing Matters
Ensuring your boat is located in it's designated slot matters a lot!
Unfortunately misplaced dinghys create an escalating chain which can at times
become complicated to unravel. I hope the information & planned actions below
will assist us all in avoiding this confusion.
Red pennant flags
Over coming weeks I will be placing pennants, as pictured, in UNALLOCATED
berth positions & this will be highlighted in the club's berthing records.
Why? Overall the idea has multiple objectives :-
1. If you see an empty space WITHOUT A BOAT & WITHOUT A FLAG, it
signals it is already allocated. - The owner must have his boat
temporarily off site – Please don't trespass!
2. If you see an empty slot WITH A FLAG, it is free & unallocated.
Essentially, should you wish to move to that berth, DO NOT REMOVE
THE FLAG, please email me on myfosscpost@gmail.com to apply for that
move.
All applications will be dealt with in strict date order. Equally I will
continue the policy of giving regular sailors & heavier boats priority when
moving closer to the water.
3. If a berth contains an unauthorised dinghy(or a flag has been removed)
IT RUNS THE RISK OF BEING IMPOUNDED. Such a craft would only
be released on payment of the full berth fee PLUS a PENALTY
determined by the main committee. This would disrupt sailing plans but is
intended to deter the odd maverick who chooses to ignore the rules!
PLEASE ,IF IT AIN'T ALLOCATED TO YOU – DON'T GO THERE!? It is

4. If a flag appears by YOUR boat, Either the records are incorrect or we
need to address something? – please email, myfosscpost@gmail.com & we
can sort it out.
5. A significant effort is underway to dispose of abandoned kit that has
accumulated in the park.
“Red flagging” fresh “suspected imposters”, hopefully, will deter dumping
but for anything recently left, tracking down the owner should be easier.

FOSSC Bar
New Ale at The George
Our small and lovely FOSSC Bar, The George, is now stocking 'Nanny State,' a low alcohol ale, brewed by Brewdog. At only 0.5% abv it is a perfect drink for rounding off your day's sailing while chatting with friends / competitors. It has been stocked at the request of club members. Abandoned Items in the Boat Store
Unmarked daggerboards, rudders, tillers and some sails have been moved to the loft area of the boat store, so if you are missing equipment check there. Please mark ALL items with your NAME, BOAT SAIL NUMBER or POST CODE before returning it to the members storage area. Unclaimed items still left in the loft at the end of the year will be assumed to be abandoned and will be disposed of or sold.
There are also a number of unmarked masts on top rung of the Topper rack, if they are yours then please mark them or they will be assumed to be abandoned. Any queries please contact the Bosun - Malcolm Payton malcolm_payton@yahoo.co.uk

Dinghies For Sale

I have attached some pictures of our RS Vision 4 seater and our Laser
Pico 1 or 2 seater sailing dinghies which are up for sale. The prices
are keen anyway, but we are offering a 30% discount to FOSSC members.
Genuine reason for sale, illness.
RS Vision description:
A well behaved, easy to manoeuvre family sailing dinghy, very pleasant
to sail with plenty of room in the cabin and under the boom for taller
people to move around. See attached 7 photos.
Year of manufacture: 2008 and owned from new.
Length overall: 4.55 metres
Hull colour: White.
Includes: The whole sailing dinghy i.e. the mainsail, Jib, sail bags,
mast, boom, all rigging, hull, rudder unit etc. Factory cover, Launch
trolley, road trailer, electrics, owner's manual. We never had a
spinnaker for it, but it would be possible to fit one.
Condition: Good, everything works with no issues, very light use over
the last 3 seasons.
Marks, defects etc: Solid factory supplied fibreglass repair to the
inside, near the mast base about 3 years ago, the factory cover is
serviceable but showing its age in places.
Price £1,750 Buyer collects.
Laser Pico description:
A very good first sailing dinghy, quick to rig, easy to control and fun
to sail. See attached 7 photos.
Year of manufacture: Thought to be 2008, bought second hand in December
2012.
Length overall: 3.5 metres
Hull colour: White.
Includes: The whole sailing dinghy, i.e. the mainsail, jib, sail bags,
mast, boom, all rigging, hull, rudder unit etc. Recently purchased
sturdy waterproof cover, Launch trolley with recently renewed wheels.
Condition: Good condition, everything works with no issues, very light
use over the last 3 seasons.
Marks, defects etc: None.
Price: £900 Buyer collects.
