Commodore’s comment – August 2018
They say that “nothing lasts forever”, well the hot sunny spell of weather has come to an end, but not before many of us have been able to enjoy our favourite pastime down at FOSSC.
The Friday evening social sailing has been growing year on year since I joined the club five years ago and I have seen 25 boats out on the water on more than one occasion this year. The last of the social sailing sessions for 2018 will be on Friday 24th August.
Both the Sunday afternoon Junior race and the Pro/Am series are continuing to grow steadily. Whilst some of our younger members might not feel ready to get into serious racing yet, both of these race types are an excellent way to improve your boat handling skills and get the best performance out of your sailing dinghy. The Pro/Am races are where the less experienced sailors, adult or junior, can go out with a seasoned racer and gain useful advice and guidance on things such as sail trimming and race tactics and you never know, you might even win the race !
Junior week at the end of July was a great success, with a full complement of participants and activities lead by Ben Gribble and his crew. The rain held off this year but it didn’t stop all of the participants getting wet on numerous occasions. A big thank you goes to Diana Heming for organising the event, Ben and his crew for running it, and Joy Morris for feeding over 100 of us at the Wednesday night barbecue.
Sailability returned to its normal slot on a Saturday morning once the junior training courses had completed and will continue running through to the end of September. David Greenfield is always on the lookout for new volunteers to come along and help out between 09:30 and 12:30 on a Saturday so if you have time on a Saturday morning, please come down and see what we do for sailability and consider joining the team in 2019. It is a very rewarding experience to be able to help others who could otherwise not share our sport of being out on the water.
September is the month that the annual Frampton show occurs and FOSSC is always represented at this event. FOSSC follow this up by having an open “Taster day” at the club and this year it is on Saturday 15th September. If you have friends or family who are considering taking up sailing, why not get them to come along and visit the club on the Saturday.
Also, if you have time available on that Saturday, we would appreciate help in setting up and running the event.
This month’s comment from myself is short as like many others of you, it is holiday time and the family and I are currently between two holidays, looking forward to sun, sailing and relaxation.
